Welcome to the Granite Center. It’s great that you’ve found your way here! That’s not a given. After all, many people think that stone is boring. When you leave our Granite Center, you’ll have a different opinion – if don’t already.
You are standing here in a disused quarry. The Granite Center, an information and event center, is built right in the middle of it. We’re very proud of the successful architecture, which has created a very special atmosphere.
Oh, sorry. I haven’t even introduced myself yet. My name is Klara, I’m the manager of the Granite Center. Granite has been with me all my life. My parents run a quarry. And I have a very special connection to this place where we are. But more about that later.
Let’s move on to the topic that this place stands for: granite. We’ll take a look into two worlds.
On the one hand, it’s about the rock itself. This incredibly resistant material was formed over 300 million years ago – an absolutely unimaginable period of time.
On the other hand, we’ll look at the people who work with the granite. They have been doing this in our region for around 5,000 years. A tiny period in geological terms – but a huge piece of cultural history!
So let’s immerse ourselves in the worlds of stone. Up ahead, where we enter the dark corridor and the time of stone, we’ll meet again.
