You’re now standing in a former quarry. It’s been out of operation already for several decades. We’ve set up a show quarry here, so that visitors can get an idea of the work that was involved. In this small open-air museum, the essential equipment required for quarrying operations has been reconstructed with the help of experienced stonecutters.
The show quarry displays a typical facility found in many places in the Bavarian Forest in the first half of the 20th century. During the age of industrialization, quarries emerged that ripped open entire flanks of a mountain, with extraction also going deep into the earth.
The massive mechanization and motorization that began after World War II is something our show quarry here didn’t keep up with. It’s a “quiet” quarry, without the rattle of pneumatic hammers or the roar of loading machines.
Let’s set off now along the shore. We’ll stop first at the stone building. See you there!
